Five female friends. They’ve known one another for more than 50 years. Each Saturday, they meet at their church fellowship hall in a small town outside Cumberland, Maryland to make cancer pads and catch up on the events of the last week with one another. One eventful week, however, one member of the usual group cannot attend and her absence due to a serious illness becomes the topic of discussion, guiding the remaining friends into reflections of relationships more five decades strong.
This production – under the direction of Timothy Bambara – tells this story of friendship and uses references and settings familiar to those from Allegany County, Maryland. Since its debut in 2004, the play has been produced “somewhere” at least once a year. In 2006, the play won Best Ensemble, Best Actress, Best Director and Best Script honors at the Ohio Community Theatre Awards. The last time it was seen in Cumberland was in November, 2009. A novel version of the play is expected to be released later this year.
“The Lightbearer, A Comedy About Life’s Little Dramas,” written by Shane Riggs. April 5-14, Friday and Saturdays, 8 pm, and Sunday matinees at 2 pm/ To commemorate the play’s 15th anniversary, this production is being dedicated in memory of Mark Baker, former artistic director of the Embassy and the first person to direct the play in 2004.
